ATA Conference Wrap-up

November 2nd, 2009 · 2 Comments

Because the American Translators Association celebrated its 50th anniversary conference in New York City, I was able to take time away from my office without too much trouble to attend some sessions and visit with colleagues and translators.
Overall, I found the conference excellent, and the turnout extraordinary. Over 2,300 attended and at times, it looked [...]

Golden Tongues

October 29th, 2009 · 1 Comment

The 50th annual conference of the American Translators Association kicked off in earnest yesterday in Times Square.
It was interesting to learn that the 25th Conference held in 1984–also in New York City–saw its events program dubbed “ATA Silver Tongues.” I did not attend that year. Nor did I find out yesterday if “silver” had [...]

ATA BOY!

September 24th, 2009 · 4 Comments

I just signed up for this year’s ATA conference in New York City, which is convenient because I live and work here (well, I’m in Brooklyn but I go to “the city” often enough that it doesn’t feel like a major schlep).
I’m looking forward to the conference, not only to see old friends and meet [...]

I think my translator is unfaithful
I wrote this article for Yndigo’s blog in my native French language and asked her/him to pursue the translation of it into English for posting, but my gut tells me she/he took some liberties. Like Pevear and Volokhonsky’s recent translation of War and Peace, I wanted to use the [...]

A few additions to the blogroll

January 30th, 2009 · No Comments

A little shout-out to a few sites I recently included in my blog roll. Go check them out if you haven’t already:

The Greener Word: Abigail Dahlberg is a German-English translator specializing in environmental issues and waste management in particular. I think of all the non-translators I meet who assume translation is such a niche business [...]

Turning over a new…

January 4th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Speakers of French, Italian and some other languages will know that a page of a book would have made a more fitting image for this blog post (tourner la page, voltare pagina, etc.) than a leaf of a tree. The leaf suggests a seasonal metaphor rather than a new beginning.
Whichever image you have in mind, [...]

September 20th, 2008 · 3 Comments

We recently had a problem with the comments feature in the blog and I was just able to resolve it. All reader comments had mysteriously dissapeared and no new comments were being recorded. A bit scary.
I actually had to go into the phpMyAdmin database where all my blog’s data is stored. Whoa… it’s a whole [...]

Getting blogged down?

June 25th, 2008 · 7 Comments

The little I know so far

Despite the fact it takes a lot of work and the desired results can be slow in coming and difficult to measure, I like blogging. It’s a great exercise for those of us who have lots of thoughts and opinions we never took the time to jot down.
And since [...]

Hmmm…

April 11th, 2008 · 2 Comments

New to blogs. Old to translation. I’ve been a translator, a translation project manager, a manager of project managers. At parties, I say I’m a translator. It has more cachet than manager somehow. Now an owner of a translation agency, I’m hoping to share some thoughts on getting words out of one language, into another, [...]
